THE SKIING...
St Jean D’Aulps is part of the world-renowned Portes
du Soleil (Doors to the Sun) – which, with 650km of skiing, is one of the largest ski areas in the world, if not
the largest. St Jean is a gem between Les Gets and Morzine but has it’s own ski area at Grande Terche. This makes
it an excellent alternative to the larger, busier resorts nearby, and offers 35km of skiing on green, blue and
red pistes.
The gondola from La Grande Terche whisks you up to the main slopes where the ski schools meet. There is a pleasant
restaurant at this level, with a large open air terrace, perfect for lunch or a coffee on a sunny day - you can
watch the ski school classes from here. There is also covered dining available plus a fast-food kiosk attached
to the restaurant, which serves hot dogs, chips, pizza, or freshly-made crepes.
Grande Terche is not linked to the Portes du Soleil but is an excellent resort for beginners, improving intermediates
and parents who are happy to let their children go off and do their own thing. This resort is popular with the
locals and French tourists and, out of the French holiday period, can be quiet. Local lift passes and lessons are
cheaper here than in the larger resorts of the Portes du Soleil - you do cover less mileage obviously, but for
novice skiers or families looking for their first ski holiday together, it’s a great choice.
St Jean D’Aulps offers an excellent alternative
to the busier and more expensive resorts of the Portes du Soleil, but still allows easy access to this fantastic
area. Morzine is just 10 minutes drive in one direction and Les Gets 10 minutes in the opposite direction. Ardent
is 12 minutes drive and offers an excellent start point for Avoriaz, Chatel, Morzine and the Swiss side of the
Portes du Soleil.
SNOW RELIABILITY...
The Portes du Soleil has an excellent snow record,
despite it’s name! Blue skies and sunny days sit side-by-side with the microclimate that comes with the area’s
proximity to Mont Blanc.
St Jean has recently invested 2.4 million euros in extensive snow-making facilities. This has provided snow cannons
which extended the season well into April last year and ensured cover for the run down under the gondola, to the
village of Grande Terche. Should the snow ever not be sufficient to ski down to this level, descent is by gondola.

THE VILLAGE...
St Jean D’Aulps is a small but thriving mountain
village. It has a school, church, shops, restaurants, bars, boulangeries etc., and a Mediavel ruin - L’Abbaye de
St Jean D’Aulps which is particularly pretty at night, when floodlit. The skiing at Grande Terche is about 5 minutes
by car from the main village and also has some very nice restaurants, a few shops, ski hire, the ski school offices
and bars for an apres-ski drink whilst waiting for your bus or setting off back to your chalet.
ACCESS...
Geneva airport is the closest at just over an hour’s
drive away. You can drive from the Channel Ports - allow around 9 hours, plus stops. This will obviously vary according
to weather and traffic conditions and the time of year. Peak weeks such as New Year and February half term can
make the roads much busier than normal.
